Slice a Brep into sections to prepare for CNC milling.

Hi, I'm trying to slice an elliptical solid into sections, so I can prepare them to cut out of MDF board (12mm thickness).

The main part that's bothering me, is the Brep|Plane that creates more sections than the number of perpendicular frames. I've read that this seems to be 'by design' so I was wondering if someone would have another approach to tackle this problem, please?

Kindest regards...

Hello Luc,

A plane extends infinitely in X-Y so it will cut a "circular" brep 2 times. What you can do is sort the 2 sections based on their distance to the plane's origin and only keep he first one.

I'm speechless. Many THX !

you're welcome, good luck with your project!

I have 1 extra question, Nikos: when I augment the number of extrusions to fi. 120, they  'overlap' one another.

Is there any possible way to create the extrusions with angled top/bottom surfaces to have a smooth finish?

Thank you for your time & effort!

Ok, I took a better look at your definition and I have to notice something:

You create one profile curve and then sweep it to create the brep and then calculate the brep-plane intersections which are the same as the original profile curve. So all this time-consuming operation can be replaced with an [orient] component.

Now, about the angled faces you could do something like:

For each point on the ellipse create 2 perpframes (above and below it), orient the profile curve one these frames and loft between the 2 curves:

I've used the 'Orient'-component and lofted to replace the sweep. ;-) The rebuild of the shape in slices is meant for CNC milling or lasercutting and then make the prototype in my workshop.

I'll study you're angles in detail. Many thanks for your time & expertise.

The geometry looks interesting. What will be its use (and size)? Hope to see some images of the prototype.

Something bothers me though, how will you manage to create the angled pieces on a cutter?

It will serve as a positive piece to make a negative silicone mold so i can reproduce it in concrete. It's my first design for my start-up to create and produce urban furniture (sorry no website of FB-page, yet ;-).

As I'm running out of time to find a way for the angled parts, I will slice the model up in vertical parts to lasercut from MDF and assembly. Still some work to do... ;-)

thank you for the feedback.

Best of luck with your project!

Here's the finished model...
