Joining hats to form a polyhedron!!!

hello all,

i have one folding definition similar to chris wiggins hyperbolic paraboloid.  im trying to join hats to form a polyhedron.  however, everything works fine but at one point the planes overlap as it folds.  tried so many different things and still coming up with the same problem.  any ideas???
