how do make a hexagonal grid follow a freeform surface?

Hello, I am thumbling on an Ornament Design, and could not find out how to make a continous hexagonal grid on some nurb surface. I can only make loads of grids, related to a basepoint, but then they are not connected...
anybody know sth?
