EDIT: I've just seen that you have already tried gHowl as your approach. There is an extra thing to download and install called OpenXML engine. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5124

Permalink Reply by Danny Boyes on June 10, 2012 at 4:05pm First thing to get across. Native Grasshopper does not have the "straight out of the box" ability to read and write spreadsheets.
However, some people have gone to the trouble of linking excel to Grasshopper one of which is Luis with his gHowl components. But this only allows you to read and write spreadsheets if you would like to have a live link then there are others who have tried and succeeded.
Here are a few others:
http://www.grasshopper3d.com/profiles/blogs/gh-excel-suite-v0-05
http://www.grasshopper3d.com/forum/topics/components-for-excel-read...
Now if you are going to stick with gHowl then you will need to download it from this link: gHowl_r50 for 0.8.x
As it's a zip file you will have to extract the files to the grasshopper libraries folder. To locate this go to the File menu in Grasshopper and select Special Folders then Components Folders. Once gHowl is in the right place you then need to install the OpenXMLSDKv2.msi file which you can get from this link: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5124. Unless this is installed Grasshopper/gHowl will not read or write xlsx files.
After these stages are done you can then use the following gHowl components:
Spreadsheet Reader - Retrieves spreadsheet data from a file stored on your computer.
Spreadsheet Writer - Allows you to write a spreadsheet file.
Permalink Reply by yahya ibraheem on June 11, 2012 at 7:58am thank you for this reply it's appreciated but when i went the file menue in grasshopper and i selcet the special folder then componets folder the folder installed on my computer was rhino file not grasshopper one ,so a new rhino folder open ? this makes nothing ? i guess i should find grasshopper file ,isn't it?
Permalink Reply by yahya ibraheem on June 11, 2012 at 8:01am the message was file type is not supported by rhino series ?
Permalink Reply by Danny Boyes on June 11, 2012 at 8:57am I don't know where you are going wrong but it is very wrong indeed.
Here is my libraries folder with gHowl in.
Which means when I open Grasshopper I get the use of the Spreadsheet Writer Component
Alternatively I could use the spreadsheet reader component to get data into Grasshopper
Apart from showing it like this I don't know of any other way to help unless you would like me to share your desktop with something like mikogo and talk you through it that way?
