Divide mesh into irregular segments

Hi, I would like to divide a mesh into segments with different hights/thickness. I tried to divide it with a plane and it worked well. How can I continue divide the mesh into multiple segments like this? I want the segments to be thicker by height (thickest on top). I would like the number of segments as an parameter, as well as the thickness.
