Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hello,

Can anyone recommend a method of analysing and displaying bend stress on a triangulated mesh?

I have been looking at various posts and files related to GSA/geometry Gym and Karamba, but I am struggling to get off the ground with these plug-ins.

Does anyone know which may be more suitable for analysing the bend of a surface. I read this post... but am unsure if it suggests exactly that a mesh bend stress display is not possible with karamba in which case i will pursue this with GG. http://www.grasshopper3d.com/forum/topics/stress-analysis-on-mesh-k...

This is my attempt at shear stress display using an example contained within a post by Daniel Piker however for a triangulated mesh as opposed to a rectangular mesh - and so the shear display works for every other triangle...  as you can see in the image half of the triangles stay green.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated!

Thanks

Chris

Hi Chris, These types of results are achievable using Geometry Gym plugins as a bridge to structural analysis software.  Like Karamba, I haven't added shell or plate elements to Egret yet.

Oasys GSA used to be free to students but they changed their policy, Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis is accessible for free as a student.  If you can email me (or post) your GH (and/or Rhino) document I'd be happy to demonstrate it with it.

Hi Jon,

Thankyou that would be great. I will send the file over.

So you think that Robot is the best option?

Its a shame that GSA no longer offer educational licenses... as I have only 23 trial days remaining but will continue this research and project work for the rest of the academic year.

I am currently at my university so will have to download the Robot software later because our connection is very slow at peak times.

Thanks for your help

If you can somehow convince your university to undertake the university licensing of GSA, then you can keep accessing it.

I'll probably have to enable a new feature or two but certainly in this case I think Robot is capable of generating the results you require.  We'll soon see.

Cheers,

Jon
