Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi all,

This is a question which may well have been already answered somewhere on the forum...

I was wondering what acoustic analysis tools and workflows already exist for GH and which is the better option?

Any help or advice is much appreciated

Hi Andy.

I dont think that there are any. It simply has to do with the way Grasshopper (re)calculates solutions and its speed. It is simply not designed for real-time applications (and that's totally ok). There are other tools that are designed for that kind of stuff and they can be made to work with GH.

So the one that I have a lot of experience in is vvvv. Its very similar to GH, but a lot more universal. It has some straight forward FFT (Fast Furier Transform), which is the thing that analises sound. Another software is Max/MSP, which is kind of similar, but even more geared towards audio. So for example you can use vvvv to do the FFT and analyse the sound. Then you can send the results to GH via OSC or you just save the results as a text file and import it in GH.

In any case, GH is not really designed for realtime data analysis. It works if you send it from another source via OSC and use gHowl in GH (http://www.grasshopper3d.com/group/ghowl). OSC is pretty cool stuff to send data between applications, so its worth checking out anyways. It can be sent via network really easily so it can even come from another computer.

You can also check pachyderm. Could help do what you are after.

best

Ok, I think I kind of misread his question a little, thinking he wants to do realtime analysis. Pachyderm looks pretty interesting! Would make a nice fit with Galapagos for evolutionary optimization.
